Tech Tip: When to Change Your Broom

← Back to Resources

Is it time to replace your broom? Knowing when to replace it can sometimes be unclear. To determine if a replacement is needed, simply measure the bristle length from the outer tips to the broom core. Main brooms should be replaced when the bristle length wears down to 7.0 inches, while gutter brooms should be replaced at 6.0 inches. Regularly monitoring bristle wear ensures optimal sweeping performance and helps prevent costly repairs caused by worn brooms.

Broom Down Pressure

Brooms perform best when the tips of the bristles have the correct amount of downward pressure. Excessive pressure prevents the bristles from using their tips effectively, limiting the “ flick” action needed for optimal sweeping. Applying too little pressure, on the other hand, will reduce cleaning efficiency.

How to Check Down Pressure

Lower the broom to the ground. Rotate it at normal operating speed while the machine remains stationary. Lift the sweeping assembly and check for a bold 2- 4 wide sweeping path.

Ideal Sweeping Path

An ideal sweeping path should measure 2- 4 inches wide. If it is wider, reduce the down pressure; if it is narrower, increase the pressure. Always sweep with the tips of the bristles, as using a “ mop action ” can quickly wear out the broom. Proper technique extends broom life and reduces equipment wear.

Keystone Tips

To maximize performance, inspect your brooms regularly for wear and tear. Replace them at the recommended intervals to maintain consistent brush performance and save money in the long run.
